I have already analysed the teaser trailer of Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone in a post below; once i had also looks at the theatrical trailer I found that there was a number of differences.

The teaser trailer is 1:54 mins long whereas the theatrical trailer is 2:37 mins long. This is a typical difference between teaser trailers and theatrical ones. This difference occurs as the theatrical trailer has to include more of the storyline whereas all the teaser trailer has to do is show genre indicators.

The theatrical trailer shows more of the different locations used in the film such as; magic shops, the bank, the wand shop (it also shows Harry buying his wand), the outside of hogwarts, the main hall, corridors, class rooms, the dark forest, quiditch field, dorm rooms, library, out of bounds areas and secret rooms. This shows the audience what they can expect from the film.

There is a lot more dialogue from the film in the theatrical trailer whereas in the teaser trailer there was a little dialogue at the end but the rest was all done in a voice over format. This is so the audience can see proper clips from the film and more than just a montage of shots.

The theatrical trailer also shows the audience what some of the characters personalities are like and what they could expect from them in the film. For example it shows Harry to be naive as it is clear he knows nothing about magic but also that he has potential (as seem in the quiditch scene etc), it shows Ron to be funny but slightly stupid and Herimone to be a book worm. It does this also with other characters such as Hagrid, Draco, Snape, Dumbledore etc.

It is clear from these trailers that the differences between a teaser and theatrical trailers are vast, the teaser trailer is there to make the audience interested enough in the film so that they will watch the theatrical trailer. It shows which genre the film is from and little bits from the storyline without giving to much away so the audience will, hopefully, become intrigued. The theatrical trailer builds on the audiences expectations of the film as it shows the plot of the film. For example in this Harry Potter trailer it is clear that Harry is going to find out he is a wizard, and a famous one at that, go to a magic school and have to fight various magical creatures with his new friends. I think both teaser and theatrical trailers are essential when attracting an audience to go and see a film and both the Harry Potter in my opinion serve their purpose very well.
