RESEARCH AND PLANNING - New Moon Trailer Analysis

I have decided to analyse the trailer for New Moon as it is a romantic, action film, with a very fast paced trailer. It uses many effects in the editing and the music fits well with creating the mood of the film, as well as building up tension to reach a climax at the end of the trailer. It will help us with producing our trailer, as we can see how they have used the fade to black transitions to break up the shots, as we are doing the same, but with captions as well.

The eerie music starts playing with a heartbeat sound creating the build up of tension with an aerial shot of the sea and the edge of the cliffs. The camera flies across part of the sea to show more of the location. This establishes the location that the film is shot in, and sets up the rest of the trailer.

The shot fades into the next clip of the orange truck pulling up outside of the main character’s house. The shot if a long shot with the truck driving into the centre of the shot. There is non-diagetic sound of the main character saying, “It’s my birthday”. It then fades to black and cuts to a medium close up of the two characters standing by the side of her truck looking at each other. She then says, “Can I ask for something?” Another cut to a close up, but over the shoulder of Edward, the male character, and shows her face when she then asks, “Kiss me.” This shows that this film is an epic love story between these two characters, and shows them push the depth of their love to the limit.

The camera then cuts to a medium shot of them leaning in for the kiss. It cuts again to a close up of this kiss showing the love and passion of the two characters. There is also non-diagetic sound of Bella, the main character saying “I love you”, as the clip again fades to black to cut into the next clip in a different location.

The next shot if a long shot of then in a room staring at a painting on the wall. This shot is from outside the room, as if the audience are looking in on the two characters through the window. It cuts to a close up of them being intimate with Edward saying, “You’re my only reason to stay”. It cuts to a different angled view of them both side on as he says “alive, if that’s what I am.” This shows that the character isn’t happy with the way he sees himself, as a monster, and is self pitying.

Another fade to black, and a long shot of a new character, Alice, pulling Bella down the stairs saying, “It’s time, it’s time.” As they walk down the stairs there are many candles lit showing the romantic yet nostalgic feeling. It cuts to a high angle shot of the whole family gathered around for Bella’s birthday celebrations. From this clip the family is standing in their pairs, showing them all as individual couples, and they are all glamorously dressed showing it to be a small party. However, Jasper is in the background by himself showing his uncomfortable in close proximity with humans. It cuts to a close up of Esme hugging Bella saying “happy birthday Bella” with Alice in the background taking pictures.

It cuts to another medium shot of Esme still hugging her but Edward is now in the background looking down at Bella and the other family members are walking towards her. It then cuts to Alice’s excited face showing Bella all her presents and massive cake. Bella then says, “Alice that cake could feed 50, you guys don’t even eat.” This gives the hint to the audience that this family isn’t human, as they don’t eat.

It then cuts back to the high angle shot of Bella being handed her presents. The music suddenly becomes very climatic as it highlights the major action happening, with the beats of the soundtrack matching the clips of the film. These beats are emphasised by symbols, which are very dramatic percussion instruments. Throughout this dramatic clip Bella only gets a paper cut. This small accident, which would mean nothing in the real world, suddenly means potential death for this character as she is in a room full of ravenousness vampires.

There is an extreme close up of her blood dripping from her finger onto the cream coloured carpet. A fade to black then one of the family members, Jasper, with a ferocious, bloodthirsty look on his face running towards Bella in slow motion. This enables the audience to see the action slowly taking in all of the emotions of these characters as they encounter this situation. It cuts then to Edwards’s reactions of pushing Bella behind him into the table and then pushes Jasper flying back into the piano causing it to collapse under the sudden, brutal force. It cuts back to Bella who’s sat on the floor bleeding from her arm now and then Edward, looking very depressed over what just happened as he looks towards her.

There is a sound bridge from one clip to the next of Bella speaking to Edward saying, “What happened with Jasper meant nothing.” This shows that she doesn’t value her life the way Edward values hers, and with Edward trying to protect Bella, she doesn’t care about the danger she’s in, as long as she is with him. The next shot is off them in the woods with Edward breaking up with her for her safety. There’s a close-up of her face showing her reaction to his words, and then a close-up of his face showing his struggle to say them and let her go. Another fade to black and Edward is gone leaving Bella in the woods by herself. The next shot is a high angle long shot of Bella alone in the woods showing her vulnerability within the big woods and her sudden loneliness.

The next shot is of Bella lying on the floor of the woods curled up with the camera turning around above her showing her even more vulnerable. This leaves the audience feeling dizzy and also shows her distraught emotions as the love of her life has just left her. For this clip the music has changed into slow depressing music to create the atmosphere of sadness and emptiness. There is a sound bridge of another character saying to Bella “how much can you mean to him if he left you here?” with a fade to black into the next clip of Bella and Lawrence in an open meadow face to face. The camera pans around Bella, enabling the audience to see how his words have hurt her. It cuts to a high angle, long shot of Lawrence walking around showing his power over Bella, who is standing still listening to him. It cuts to a close up of Bella with her confused face expression as he says, “ I can’t help myself, you are so mouth watering.” There is then a close up of Lawrence with red eyes. This shows that he is a vampire as well, about to eat Bella.

In this sequence there are fade to blacks breaking up the different clips, creating more tension and building up to a big climax. The music changes into heat beats for each individual clip to break them up and create increasing tension for the action within the film. There is a close up of Lawrence stroking Bella’s hair about to kill her and then a close up of Bella closing her eyes, giving up, waiting to be eaten. A medium shot of Jacob Black without his shirt on, standing up, not looking happy. This clip brings a sex appeal to the film, as this character is very muscular and good-looking. Next is Jacob jumping over a fence to show his urgency, and his athletic ability. As he does this there is a growl of a wolf giving the audience a hint that Jacob is not human either. Lawrence has his hand raised ready to kill Bella, bearing all his teeth. Jacob is running along the grass, with another wolf growl, Bella turns to run away. A close up of Lawrence looking scared as he is distracted whilst Bella has run away. There is a medium shot of Bella running yelling “Jake, run!” Bella falls to the ground and Jacob jumps over her into the air transforming into a werewolf, teeth and claws bearing.

As he lands on the ground pausing ready to pounce on his pray, there is a fade to black with the title of the film wiping on to the screen, getting larger. There is a growl from Jacob reinforcing that in this film there is werewolves as well as vampires. The font is in an orange, glowing colour to represent the moon in relation to the title of the film ‘New Moon’. The title fades of the screen, and then the date it is released fades into the screen, with the same glowing hint to the font.
