RESEARCH AND PLANNING - Magazine Cover Analysis

As part of our marketing campaign for our film we have to create a magazine front cover. I am going to analyse this cover of Empire magazine as it is a special film magazine and it can help us outline how we should lay out our magazine cover.

As you can see the title of the magazine is the largest font on the page, in capital letters, to create awareness and the vibrant red colour of the text makes it stand out, from the rest of the pictures and writing on the cover. As this magazine is well-known it doesn't matter that an image of Johnny Depp is covering part of the title. In very small text underneath the title of the film magazine is its website address. This allows convergence of the audience to access this magazine and extra features on a multi platform - the Internet.

This picture of Johnny Depp, is the most predominant and it lets the audience know this issue of the magazine is about his new film 'Public Enemies'. The title of his film is again in capital letters and in a grey colour which contrasts with the grey background of this cover. There is a smaller caption in white text above saying 'Johnny Depp Steals Summer'. This shows the critics positive review of his acting in this new film.

The cover shows the audience some of the features it includes to entice them into reading this magazine, as shown along the right hand side. It shows the 'first looks' of the new film releases with emphasise on the Heroes of 2010. They have names three films with a picture to make the cover interesting and attractive. They are highlighted by a white outlined background, to make them standout. Under this is the bar code, used for the shops to scan, and the price which is £3.99. Currently our group hasn't discussed placing a price on our magazine cover, but I think we should as every magazine legally, has to have a price on it.

At the bottom of the magazine cover, are more features shown within this magazine, in the same red and white text, keeping this the main colour scheme of this cover. At the top of the poster is an 'on-set exclusive' of Harry Potter 6. With a small picture of the character Harry Potter in the corner.

As you can see, there are many features of the magazine placed in a specific layout designed to attract readers and make it standout from other competing magazines. This magazine has a running colour scheme of red, white and grey. It is full of USP's such as the movies it has reviewed, first exclusive looks at film sets, analysis's of the 2010 heroes and many more. This is a useful magazine to analyse at it is specifically for films and we should hope to produce one similar for our marketing campaign as part of our coursework.
