EVALUATION - Our trailer ~ The Hyperdermic Needle theory

  • You don't choose what to watch you are TOLD what to think....

The music and shots which we used in our trailer were chosen specifically to tell the audience how to feel. The dramatic and pace building music builds tension and makes the audience feel on edge. The shots which are edited to be short and run into each other smoothly make the trailer run quickly, adding to the fast pace, this makes the audience feel as though the narrative is moving quickly and this causes an adrenaline rush, making it seem exiting. The characters reaction also tells the audience how they should be feeling as a result of the events shown to them and also causes them to feel emotions such as empathy and pity, and also hate and resentment.

  • The passive audience is injected with Ideologies....
  • This means the audience is seen as a passive mass who will immediately accept the presented version of events....

This point can be easily related to our trailer in that the audience are told to sympathise with the female character, representing her as the victim, when in actual fact after watching the film, it could be revealed that Eric is the one suffering.

  • Problem with this theory - it doesn't account for the complex emotional responses that can occur....

Depending on the member of the audience, everyone could react differently to the story line. Those who may have been in Megan's position may have a different reaction to those who haven't and wont understand the story line in as much detail.
