EVALUATION - Our trailer ~ Audience

I believe that the target audience of our production is generally teenagers and young adults. we specifically selected a male villain and a female victim so that the whole of the audience will have someone to relate to. Clearly our trailer is aimed at fans of thrillers, which is why a younger age group is possibly more appropriate, however i think in terms of race, gender, social class etc. our trailer is suitable for all. After establishing the target audience of our trailer we needed to make sure that we were clear of their likes and dislikes and what would be more appealing to them before actually beginning the planning of the film. We therefore conducted several surveys and questionnaires, using both Facebook and by finding volunteers and interviewing them, to find out exactly what the audience wanted. We also analysed a selection of trailers and marketing campaigns in order to get an idea of the market which was already available, look at its strongest and weakest aspects, and adapt our planning accordingly. It was also important, as well as hearing from our audience what they like/buy/watch, what they thought of films which had already been released, what they believed were the best and worst aspects of thrillers before we started filming our own.

We hope that our production will appeal to our target audience for a number of reasons. Firstly we have tried to make it very clear that this is a thriller, and have therefore indicated the age at which the film is aimed. The fact that the main characters are also teenagers/young adults suggests that this is the age of the audience we would be expecting to come and see the film. We have attempted to adapt the trailer in such a way that the techniques we use will attract the intended target audience. We have used elements from other thriller trailers which we have analysed, for example the dramatic flash-transitions and the dramatic music, as an indicator of the genre and theme, and so hopefully also an indicator of our target market. Other techniques which we have used are the shot shots which are shown, as the younger teen aged audience possibly has a shorter attention span, and the action of the flash shots adds to the drama and tension. The fade to blacks in between the shots also suggest fear, danger and mystery, mirroring the narrative and so reflecting the genre and target audience.
