EVALUATION - Our trailer ~ Media Language

Camera work...

In terms of camera work we attempted to use it to influence the audience's view of the characters. We used constant high angle shots to show Jen as the weak and vulnerable character, and low angle shots to show Raf as being powerful and in command. This effect also helps the audience to see the villain from the victims point of view, as by viewing him from a low angle, he appears intimidating and frightening. The shots in the flashbacks are on a level view so that the characters seem to be of an equal position. They understand each other better and are both in equal power, it is only when Eric's character "changes" that Megan becomes intimidated and the camera angles change. A lot of the views on Megan running around the house packing her bag to escape are of a high angle, again to show her as weak and vulnerable and reflect her emotionally unstable state. For the shot of the knife being removed from the drawer we used a close up shot to show the significance of the weapon and to make it clear that it is him who is holding the knife. The last camera angle is positioned on an even level, however at the end of the shot Jen sinks down into the bottom of the screen, showing that she has lost any control of the situation that she had and is now completely helpless.

Editing...

In terms of editing we tried to make the transitions between shots very significant. Fade to blacks represent the cuts between shots in the bag-packing scenes, showing that they are dark times and representing how scared she is. It also mirrors the darkness of Eric's character. The dip to whites however reflect the goodness and purity of Megan's character and also mark the transitions which lead to flashbacks. The white of the flash shows how these were happier times and the fact that it appears to be an actual flash makes the flashback that much more effective. We tried to edit all of the bad backing shots together and make them shot to help it flow. Each shot is only a few seconds to keep up the pace and mirror the action of the narrative. We also edited the flashback images by changing the contrast to make them feel brighter and more cheerful.

Sound...

The music which we chose was fast paced and racy. This is to mirror the fast movement of the narrative and also of the characters as Megan is seen rushing around the house frantically packing her bag. The music adds to the tension and we specifically matched the climax of the music with the most dramatic shot, the knife scene, so as to add to the tension, the past pace cuts off exactly as the next shot cuts in, emphasising the transition. The beat of the music almost sounds like a ticking clock, adding again to the tension. The sound effects which we edited in were specifically chosen to add to the spookiness, and we emphasised the sound on the door knocking for example with the intention of making the audience jump.

Mise-en-scene...

In terms of Mise-en-scene the trailer can also be analysed in terms of several aspects. For example the lighting remains very dark for most of the shots, representing the darkness of the villain and also the darkness of the plot. The shadows created by this effect imply that there is something hiding in the darkness. We carefully chose the costumes of our characters to mirror their personalities, for example Raf's costume is very dark and overpowering, whereas Jen is dressed more in light colours and is more dressed up in the time when she is happy, and trying to impress Raf than in the time when she is scared, in which she is practically dressed in a plane t-shirt and jeans with her hair tied back.
