RESEARCH & PLANNING - Pans Labyrinth Connotation and Denotation



This is the poster for Pans Labyrinth. In all film posters the audience can connote and denote the information given. This is where they can take the literal meaning of something on the poster, or make up their own opinions about what they see.

Connotation:

  • It looks very supernatural due to the shape of the old tree standing in a humans stance, peering over the little girl.
  • From the colours used for the poster it looks very dark and mysterious, indicating the genre of this film.
  • It connotes that this film is an adventure, as the little girl is in the middle of the wood looking up at this huge tree, which may be an entry into another world.

Denotation:

  • We can see the facts in the written text about who stars in this film, the directors, producers, production studio ect.
  • It is a story about a little girl who enters this mysterious, magical world, going on a quest.
  • The text at the top tells the audience that it is a fairytale for adults.

Everyone who see this film poster can interpret in in many different ways from the connotation and denotation.
